Overflow pool

construction and operation features

Overflow pool is a special type of water structure characterised by the technology of water drainage and return. Unlike skimmer pools, where the water enters through holes in the walls, in overflow pools the water flows over the edge of the pool into a special trough around the perimeter. It then enters a storage tank, is cleaned by filters and pumps, and then returns to the artificial reservoir. This mechanism makes overflow pools particularly popular in elite private homes, hotels, spa complexes and sports centres.

As you can see from the diagram, the top layer of water flows into a special tray, from where it passes through the overflow manifold into the storage tank. The filter pump then takes the water from this tank and sends it to the filtration station where it is cleaned. After filtration, the water goes to the heat exchanger for heating. The heated water is returned to the pool through the bottom nozzles and rises by convection, taking dirt particles, bacteria and other impurities with it. The bottom drain is not normally involved in the recirculation process and is only used in specific cases, for example to drain water from the basin or filter without using an overflow system. Purified cold water is used to replenish the pool and can be fed through a pre-filter into the pump suction line or directly into the overflow tank, depending on the selected pool operating mode - filling or normal operation.

Benefits of an overflow pool

Overflow pools are visually more attractive because the water level is at the same level as the edge of the pool. The water flows over the edge, creating an illusion of infinity. They are particularly effective in areas with panoramic views.

The water in an overflow pool is constantly circulated, helping to maintain the same temperature and cleanliness throughout the pool. This not only improves bathing comfort, but also water quality, as contaminants are effectively trapped in the overflow basins.

In pools with an overflow grate, the water is constantly circulating through the filtration system, allowing it to be effectively cleaned of impurities. Such a system prevents the accumulation of debris on the surface of the water and also helps to better remove impurities from the depths of the reservoir.

These tanks can accommodate large numbers of swimmers at the same time without significant changes in water level, making them particularly popular for public facilities where a steady stream of visitors is expected.

Overflow pool - construction stages

Building an overflow pool requires a more complex approach than building a skimmer structure, as it involves additional engineering systems and parts. Our company, ModernPools, deals with the construction of all types of in-ground pools, including such complex projects using an overflow grate. The main stages in the construction of an overflow pool include:

At the planning stage, it is important to choose the location of the water feature. It is important to consider the landscape features of the site, the type of soil and the availability of utilities. An overflow pool, especially if it is an open structure, requires careful integration with its surroundings to blend in with the landscape.

Planning includes calculating the optimum volume of the bowl, its shape and selecting a location for the overflow tray and storage tank.

At this stage, a pit is dug for the pool. The depth and dimensions will depend on the project chosen. Once the soil has been excavated, a foundation is laid to ensure the stability of the structure. This is usually a reinforced concrete slab, which serves as the foundation for the pool.

The pool bowl is a key element of the structure and must be durable and waterproof. Concrete is the most commonly used material because of its strength and durability. Concrete pools are additionally reinforced to prevent deformation and cracking.

Trays for collecting overflow water are installed around the perimeter of the artificial reservoir. They must be precisely aligned so that the water flows evenly into the system. The trays are covered with grids to prevent large debris from entering.

The overflow system requires the installation of a special tank to collect the water that flows over the edge of the tank. The volume of water is calculated according to the size of the tank and the expected load. The water from the tank is fed into the filtration system where it is purified and then returned to the artificial reservoir.

It is important to select and install pumps, filters and water treatment systems correctly to ensure uninterrupted operation of the water body and clean water. Modern filtration systems include not only mechanical filters but also disinfection systems such as ultraviolet lamps or chlorine generators.

Once the main construction work has been completed, the pool is lined. Various materials can be used: tiles, mosaics, PVC film. It is important to choose high quality materials that are resistant to water, chemicals and temperature changes.

In addition to the cladding, it is necessary to fit overflow grates and cover the trays with decorative elements that match the overall style of the reservoir.

Once all the construction and finishing work has been completed, it is necessary to test all the systems of the artificial reservoir. Make sure that the pumps are working properly, that the water is flowing evenly and that the filtration system can cope with cleaning.

Operating an overflow pool requires regular maintenance: checking the condition of the pumps, cleaning the filters, monitoring the water quality. Despite the higher construction and maintenance costs compared to other types of pools, overflow structures offer an exceptional level of comfort and aesthetic appeal.

Overflow pool - our works

An overflow pool is the ideal solution for those who value elegance, comfort and high quality water. Its construction requires careful preparation and a professional approach, as each element - from the pool to the filtration systems - must be thought out to the smallest detail. With the right design and quality construction, an overflow pool will become an ornament to your property and will provide you with many years of comfort and swimming pleasure.
